What is APEL.A?

APEL.A is defined as a systematic process that involves the identification, documentation and assessment of prior learning based on prior experience, such as knowledge, skills and attitudes to determine the extent to which an individual has achieved the desired learning outcomes, as access to a study program and/or the award of credit.

APEL.A provides an opportunity for those who have work experience but lack qualifications or no academic qualifications to continue their studies at Higher Education Provision (PPT).

In general, APEL.A assessment involves the assessment of the knowledge acquired by an individual through formal education or through their prior experience.

Who Is APEL.A For?

APEL.A is suitable for individuals who:
Have relevant work or industry experience
Have learned through practice, training, or self-directed learning
Are able to demonstrate knowledge, skills, and competencies
Are committed to preparing a structured learning portfolio

APEL.A Assessment Components

Applicants may be assessed through:
A portfolio of evidence
An interview or presentation
A challenge test (where applicable)
Assessment methods depend on programme requirements.

After Passing APEL.A

Successful candidates will receive an APEL Certificate recognised by MQA.

This certificate may be used to apply for admission into UMS programmes, subject to faculty approval and programme availability.

APEL.A T6 provides an alternative entry route into selected Bachelor’s Degree programmes at Universiti Malaysia Sabah for individuals who do not meet conventional academic entry requirements but possess substantial and relevant prior experiential learning.

At this level, applicants are assessed on whether their accumulated learning through work experience, training, and self-directed learning demonstrates knowledge, skills, and competencies equivalent to pre-university and early undergraduate learning outcomes.
